Remember when quarterbacks were compared to Dan Marino?

If so, those days are all but kaput thanks to the NFL’s movement to make this a pass-first league and of course, a collection of supremely talented quarterbacks.

After five weeks of play, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers are all on pace to shatter Dan Marino’s single-season passing mark of 5,084 yards, set back in 1984.

Here is a look at where each quarterback stands five games into the season:

2011 Yards Projected Yards
Tom Brady 1,874 5,988
Drew Brees 1,769 5,652
Aaron Rodgers 1,721 5,550

Marino was a stat machine in his day. However, as time marches on, it seems his impact on the game will continue to wane.

He deserves better than being known as the guy who got steamrolled by Joe Montana’s 49ers in Super Bowl XIX. Yet, it appears we are headed on that course.

Remember, everyone’s favorite gunslinger and Wrangler wearin’ quarterback from Mississippi supplanted Marino in nearly every relevant career passing record.

Barring injury, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers could possibly break the mark; especially considering the level of bad-tackling and bad pass coverage penetrating NFL teams.
